By requiring disclosure of prior purchases by sponsors and cosponsors and timeouts on trading related investments while a bill is being debated and 7 days after it passes, the market edge of insider trading with government knowledge is removed. Further restrictions on conflicts of interests and evasion of anti-bribery laws such as logging lobbyist conversations and increased scrutiny around post term employment also help to keep our legislators in the state house for the right reasons: serving the needs of the people.

New technology often comes with many challenges to safely integrate it into existing systems including challenges to lawmakers to understand the technology, its limitations, and its potential for misuse. If the federal government chooses to disable Arizona from making reasonable laws for the implementation of new technologies then we must respond with due diligence or state chartered alternatives to ensure that new technologies do not introduce new hazards to the state and the people. If the state is disallowed from regulating such technology in the commercial sector, the response shall be to enhance the public’s capacity to seek relief to and be compensated for the abuse of their rights, their data, and their trust.

Employees in Arizona deserve a safe place to work to provide for their families. Too often service workers and those who interact with our most vulnerable population are exposed to unreasonable risks of disease and infection. This act gives them recourse to make their employers answer for a lack of reasonable protections and precautions that would limit transmission between employees and the public as well as enhanced protections for immunocompromised people and those of heightened vulnerability. The costs of taking time off to avoid infecting others or care for a sick child is also addressed by mandating universal sick leave with the state sharing the burden of cost for employers through a 150% tax deduction for sick wages and a state fund to reimburse tipped employees. It cannot be overlooked that the more the spread of disease is mitigated by this act, the less the costs associated with this act will be incurred. This act also also provides a limited time grant to businesses, schools, and child care facilities to develop and implement a worker safety program to protect their employees and the public from preventable spread of disease.

ARICC: A Fair Chance for Rural Arizona

Affordability is supply and demand. When monopolies control water, broadband, and housing, they charge whatever they want—and our communities pay the price.
